31 March 2012 - Fiona Apple - Across The Universe

For a little while, Fiona Apple was everywhere.  She had a couple of big, yet edgy hits, with somewhat naughty videos to accompany them.  She was so big, she was able to release an album with the longest title in history.

It is this quiet Beatles cover, from the soundtrack to the movie Pleasantville, that showcases the power of her voice better than any song she ever wrote.  So quietly beautiful, and a perfect accompaniment to a quietly beautiful movie - to this day, one of my favorites, with a lot of excellent performances and fantastic art direction.  Some of that, a black-and-white/color combination, shines through in this video.

For those who care, that long album title was When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring There's no body to batter when your mind is your might So when you go solo, you hold your own hand And remember that depth is the greatest of heights And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land And if you fall it won't matter, cause you'll know that you're right.  Don't worry.  I had to look it up.
