21 February 2013 - Iggy Pop & The Stooges - Burnin' Up & Ray of Light & Ciccone Youth - Burnin' Up

I went looking for Madonna covers today.  A lot of bands have done covers of a lot of her singles.  Perhaps her most covered single, however, is "Burnin' Up", which was a very early single and her first minor pop chart hit.

So, when I stumbled upon Iggy Pop & The Stooges doing that song, as well as "Ray of Light." a later single, I had to jump on that.  Sure, they aren't traditional covers of her songs, but Madonna - who is in attendance - seems to enjoy them.



A side note - Mike Watt, who has been a Stooge since 2003 and is on stage for this performance, also covered "Burnin' Up" as a member of the Sonic Youth side project, Ciccone Youth.  (It is said that this project is what got Mike Watt out of his deep depression over the loss of his best friend and Minutemen bandmate d. Boon) Here is their version, with Watt on vocals and boom stick, and guest starring Greg Ginn (of Black Flag fame) on guitar.

20 February 2013 - Beastie Boys - Screaming at a Wall

I've always been pretty hit or miss when it came to the Beastie Boys. I really liked that era in the early 90s when they picked up their instruments and played some bad ass punk rock. Granted, there wasn't a lot of songs they did this on, but I certainly appreciated it more (especially when I "had" to see them at Lollapalooza). Anyway, I stumbled upon this pretty true to the original live version of them playing a classic Minor Threat song. Can you imagine if it was the other way around? I can totally see Ian MacKaye singing Brass Monkey...awww that funky monkey.

19 February 2013 - The Fat Boys feat. The Beach Boys - Wipeout

Happy birthday to Prince Markee Dee, who celebrates a birthday today.  What better way to celebrate than  this reinterpretation of a Surfaris classic?  

The Beach Boys, who some people think did the original, but didn't, were really good sports in sharing the spotlight with (the late) Human Beatbox.  Surprisingly, this teaming, which came in the shadow of the Aerosmith-Run DMC pairing, worked well musically.

18 February 2013 - Deftones - To Have And To Hold

I was going to post a Presidents of the United States of America cover today, but that would be too obvious (and besides, Tony already posted their version of Video Killed the Radio Star). Instead, here's the Deftones playing a pretty rockin' version of one of my favorite songs off of Depeche Mode's Music For The Masses record.

15 February 2013 - The Decemberists - If I Can't Change Your Mind

Sugar's If I Can't Change Your Mind is one of my favorite songs of the 90s (heck, it's one of my favorite songs ever). The Decemberists are one of my favorite bands of the past decade. Needless to say, this video from The Onion's A.V. Club makes me one happy dude.

14 February 2013 - Golden Smog - Shooting Star

I get a message from Tony this morning saying, "hey can you do Totally Covered today." I of course reply, "screw you." But because I'm totally awesome and the nicest guy on the freaking planet I saved his lazy ass (he gave some lame excuse about a meeting or something work related...as if). So here I am even though...



Of course I couldn't find an actual video for this awesome Bad Company cover (remember the video above) so just listen to Dave Pirner's voice and stare at the Clerks poster while imagining all of Kevin Smith's characters doing wacky things.

13 February 2013 - Ween - Hot for Teacher

Y'all know I always try to find the finest of covers for this here site. And while Ween certainly lacks in lyrical accuracy on this Van Halen classic, they surely make up for it by rockin' it hard. So that's gotta count for something. Right? By the way, can you imagine if Ween recreated the original Van Halen video for Hot For Teacher? Yeah, wrap your noodles around that one.
